The Crooked Fiddle Band join Bird’s Robe Records

Experimental folk-rock quartet THE CROOKED FIDDLE BAND have signed with Sydney-based label Bird’s Robe Records.

One of Australia’s most intense audio experiences, the band have announced the release of a double A-side single ahead of their upcoming second LP, Moving Pieces Of The Sea, which was recorded in Chicago with the legendary Steve Albini (Nirvana, The Pixies, Gogol Bordello, Joanna Newsom).

‘The Vanishing Shapes of a Better World’ is an epic and compelling instrumental, vast in scope and wide in breadth, while ‘Deepwater Drownings – Part I’ (radio edit) opens with folding tidal darkness and foreboding overtures before giving way to a spare and crystalline ‘Crooked Fiddle’ vocal. The double A-Side release hints at the shift in direction taken by Moving Pieces Of The Sea towards something cinematic, expansive and epic in scale.

They have now announced an extensive run of Australian shows supporting the release of their album on October 1st.

The Barons of Tang join Bird’s Robe Records

Explosive chainsaw-folk outfit THE BARONS OF TANG have signed with Sydney-based label Bird’s Robe Records.

One of Australia’s most hard-working bands, The Barons of Tang have announced the release of their debut album, Into The Mouths of Hungry Giants.

Showcasing their compelling mix of gyspy swing, oddball groove and raucouos singalongs in the same breath as complex time signatures and showstopping musicianship, the album is a long-awaited studio release for fans.

The release follows an incredible touring schedule for the band, most recently coming off a two-month UK & European tour, taking in Fusion Festival (Germany), Womad in Spain & the UK, Jamboree in London and Hootananny in Brixton. The band have played some of the world’s biggest festivals in recent times, including the 2012 Roskilde Festival in Denmark. Indeed, 2012 was a break-out year for the band, who completed a massive 34-date North American tour, before heading straight into the European festival season.

This year sees them capitalise on the buzz around the band, with their debut album release and a string of Australian shows this spring & summer, leading into another packed international itinerary in 2014.

We Lost The Sea release new video for ‘Barkhan Charge’

Experimental post-metal group We Lost The Sea have released a new video clip for their track ‘Barkhan Charge’, taken from their 2012 debut LP ‘The Quietest Place On Earth.’

Watch it here:

The release comes a month after after the band played an emotional support set for US post-rock act This Will Destroy You at Sydney’s Annandale Hotel, following the recent passing of singer Christopher Torpy.

The band’s guitarist Matt Harvey released the following statement with the announcement:

“This video is dedicated to the memory of Chris Torpy. Rest in peace brother.

After much blood, sweat and tears, cab, bus, train, bike, tram, plane rides all over the city and country, jumping fences and 5am finishes, spiders, leeches, warehouses and an email word count of pleases and thank yous that will remain unspoken: the We Lost The Sea ‘Barkhan Charge’ video is finally finished. A very large thank you to everyone involved.

This is my first project as director. We are really proud of this product, especially me. Everyone was stoked on it from the get go including Chris and he helped out a lot on set, was super excited with the result and even got me to write something for him to add to his application to get into SAE to do film making. So what we ended up with was a great immortalised tribute to our mate.

The theme of video itself is really abstract. Most of the inspiration came from Chris’ lyrics. I even plotted out the scenes on a graph of intensity vs time and tried to time certain ideas in the script to emotional parts in the song. Basically it’s about moving on to another realm. The Barkhan Charge is a mythical idea or place about moving sand dunes that roll and move through the desert like giant waves and a man’s journey through that. So the video is about a guy who wakes up in his own insanity and walks through his own mind through certain scenarios from his past or future or whatever. The external shoot represents him going through the journey of his own madness, and the internal shoot has him trapped in his head at the same time and the events parallel what he sees on the outside until finally he moves on or actually just falls into a loop.

As for the status of the band, I would like everyone to know that we are not breaking up. I think that there are some of us that are at a loose end and are obviously heavily emotionally affected by this and have messed up their heads a bit, but as a whole, the band continues in some form or another. Mark and I are keen to find a new singer and start writing and touring like we always wanted to. We are already writing for a new record and also are in discussions for a separate special project that we will firm up and give more details on later in the year.

So for now – we hope you enjoy the clip. Please share it around and we will see you soon.“
